Hanuman Ji Roles In Mahabharat

Lord Hanuman is well known for his extreme devotion to Lord Rama. Lord Hanuman is always depicted in the Indian folklaire as an icon of true devotion and a symbol of the power of true devotion and chastity.
Lord Hanuman's devotion to Lord Rama is symbolic of the devotion of the enlightened individual soul towards the supreme soul.
Many stories from the Indian literature tell the tales of Lord Hanuman protecting devotees of Lord Rama and helping those who seek his either spiritually or otherwise. Swami Tulasidas has written these lines in respect of Lord Hanuman's great character, in praise of his powers and also devotion.

Hanuman Ji Roles In Mahabharat:

The starting point of most modern tellings of the Mahabharata- the union of king Shantanu of Hastinapura and the beautiful Ganga- is, in fact, an episode that occurs quite late in the actual epic and has a very interesting back-story to it (which appears much earlier). What follows is my attempt at telling the two in order.

In the halls of Brahma, atop the great mountain Meru overlooking all the worlds, of which Brahma Himself was Creator, there once assembled a great gathering. Attending it were all manner of celestial beings such as the devas, the stars, the celestial musicians and spirits high and low. Among these was Mahabhisha who had once been a great king among men and who had joined the ranks of the celestial beings after his earthly demise. This was not an honor accorded to every great king of men. Mahabhisha was not only born in the line of a great king named Ikshwaku (an ancestor of Rama), he also had the rare distinction of having performed a thousand Ashwamedha yajnas and a hundred Rajasuya yajnas during his earthly tenure. In other words, this king called Mahabhisha had sealed his authority over Earth no less than a thousand times and among all his peers as supreme emperor no less than a hundred times. The gods were left with no choice but to allow him access to all their privileges, such as this gathering, once he died and became a heavenly spirit. And so it was that Mahabhisha was present among the ranks of those who Brahma considered important enough to call to assemble for His purpose.

Also present there in halls of Brahma was the celestial river, the Akasha Ganga, in human form. In this form, she stood out for her beauty that was unmatched by even the fairest of Indra's nymphs, the apsaras. The gods and celestials respectfully avoided gazing at her but that was a task of immense difficulty, for her slender waisted, ample bosomed form was verily irresistible. Making it even more challenging for them to avert their gaze from her person was her choice of clothing- a most flimsy, loose and transparent garment that revealed much of what it was meant to conceal, made of what seemed like the spray of her waters, now froth and now droplets. But the gods dared not stare, for she was Ganga.
